Lady Pointers move past Minford in season opener

SOUTH POINT — Carole King sang, “I feel the earth move under my feet, I feel the sky come tumbling down.”

When South Point scored two runs in the third inning, coach Tara Layne felt something move as well and it kept moving until the Lady Pointers came back to beat the Minford Lady Falcons 4-3 Monday in the season opener for both teams.

“After we got two runs back, I really felt a shift on the team,” said Layne. “That is when our pitching and defense really started working well for us.”

Minford took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a hit by Autumn Griffith a throwing error, a hit by Lora Fuhrmann, a passed ball and Nicky Jacko’s two-run single.

Things got a little worse in the third when Minford scored on a hits by Courtney Spriggs and Griffith and a passed ball.

But things changed in the bottom of the inning as South Point scored twice.

Andrea Kleinman singled to lead off the inning and Morgan Wells walked. After a force out at third, Katelynn Leonard reached on an error that scored two runs.

South Point tied the game in the fifth when Wells reached on a two-out error moved up on a wild pitch and came home on a hit by Kayla Fletcher.

The Lady Pointers scored the winning run in the sixth inning.

Kaitlyn Brown had a one-out single, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Hannah Carey beat out an infield hit that scored Brown.

“I just told the girls that now is the time we have to make something happen. They definitely listened,” said Layne.

Rachel Murnahan turned in a solid pitching performance. She struck out three, did not walk a batter, allowed five hits and allowed only one baserunner after the third inning as she retired 12 of the final 13 batters.

The Lady Pointers hosted Oak Hill on Tuesday.
