The cold weather may still have hold of the area, but already volunteers are gearing up for a special kind of spring-cleaning.
Saturday, May 7, will be the third annual Lawrence Countywide Cleanup Day that attracts more than 700 workers who spend hours picking up trash and litter along the roadways.
Last year 51 groups collected 1,100 bags of litter and filled 55 roll-off containers and 12 truckloads with trash that came from 58 miles of roads.
“We are happy to have (those groups) and want more to join us,” Dan Palmer, of the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste District, said.
This year the event will be part of the Great American Cleanup and the national organization will provide 1,500 bottles of water, along with banners advertising the event.
The solid waste district has also published a free booklet listing recycling sites in Lawrence and Scioto, as well as the names and phone numbers of the enforcement officer, litter control officer and education outreach director.
“We get so many phone calls about where are the recycling sites and how do we get ahold of you,” Palmer said. “This provides a lot of our information.”
The booklet was designed in-house by the district and is available at the district’s headquarters at the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization in Ironton, the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and the Early Childhood Center, both in South Point.
