SOUTH POINT — The students in the Open Door School bell choir have been busy spreading Christmas cheer around the county, and they gave a dose of it to the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library Southern Branch on Wednesday afternoon.
The students, in their matching purple Open Door School T-shirts, lined up carefully to perform for everyone at the library Wednesday. The teachers and aides took care to make sure every student could be seen, and then passed out the colored hand bells while the students waited patiently.
The choir performed “O, Holy Night,” “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Samantha Bryan, 19, said she especially enjoyed performing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Dylan Smith, 11, said his favorite Christmas song they have practiced is “Jingle Bells,” because it’s fast.
Raven Webb, 12, said her favorite part about performing the songs with the bell choir is “being nice to people.”
Misty Chaffins, Primary II teacher, said the students really enjoy being a part of the bell choir. With approximately 63 students in the school altogether, 24 of them are part of the bell choir, which was broken into two groups this year.
“They love doing the bells,” Chaffins said. “We practiced every day after Thanksgiving until now.”
She said she likes the opportunity this gives the students.
“Some of our students in wheelchairs can’t do basketball or cheerleading, but they can ring bells,” she said.
Alda Wagner, library branch manager, enjoyed the performance.
“They did awesome,” Wagner said. “It was very touching. It was the look of pure joy when they were doing it.”
