CHESAPEAKE — Saturday night’s all right for fighting,.
Elton John knew what he’s talking about when it comes to the Buckeye Boxing Team that trains in the Chesapeake Community Center.
The group includes five boxers who captured silver glove championships last Saturday night at the Ashland (Ky.) Armory.
Tyler Blankenship, 11, who won the West Virginia 11-12 age 90-pound state title; Shaden White, 12, won the Kentucky 12-13 119-pound title; Zack Bartrum, 12, won the Kentucky 12-13 80-pound title; Hunter Caudill, 11, won the 10-11 Kentucky 95-pound state title; and Caleb Caudill, 2, who won the 112-13 Kentucky 85-pound title.
J.B. Waugh, 9, was unable to compete for the state championship due to age when he fought a matched bout and stopped his opponent in the first round with a series of blows.
Bartrum, Hunter Caudill and Caleb Caudill will advance to the Regional Silver Gloves in Terre Haute, IN., in February.
White will advance pending injury due to a broken hand he suffered in his bout. Blankenship must wait a year to advance due to lack of experience.
Anyone interested in boxing is invited to the center at 5:30 p.m. weekdays except Wednesdays.
