ASHLAND, Ky. — The Ashland-Boyd County Health Department is offering a Hepatitis A vaccination clinic from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Dec. 1 at the health department’s clinic building for anyone who ate from the drive-thru at Burger King on Winchester Avenue in Ashland, Ky., on Nov. 7 through Nov. 13, Nov. 15 and Nov. 17.

There is a limited supply of vaccinations from the state that are available for $2, and after those are used, there is a limited supply available for $25.

Holly West, health educator at the health department, said the vaccines are on a first-come, first-serve basis, and while an appointment is not required, they are ordering vaccines now and would like to have an idea of how many people to prepare for.

A drive-thru employee is one of five confirmed cases of Hepatitis A in Boyd County.

While the odds of a person contracting Hepatitis A from a drive-thru employee are low, the health department is taking proactive measures.

“It is our job to protect the community,” West said. “There is always the possibility, it’s just unlikely.”

West said those who are at biggest risk are people who visited the drive-thru multiple times during that time period and those with weakened immune systems.

West said getting the vaccine quickly after contact with someone that has Hepatitis A can make a big difference.

“If you get it within the two-week timeframe, there is an 85 percent chance it will keep you from getting it, but you have to follow up with the booster 6 months later,” she said.

Symptoms appear within two to six weeks and can include fever, jaundice, grey-colored stools, dark urine, abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and joint pain, though West said some people may have no symptoms, especially children.
