An interception to stop a potential scoring drive set up the winning score as the Fairland Dragons outscored the Rock Hill Redmen 39-38 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game

Jesse Lane intercepted a pass but was tackled at the 1-yard line. Rock Hill was unable to move the ball and had to punt from its own end zone. The Dragons returned the punt to the 10-yard line and Tyree Ceaser scored on a 1-yard run with less than two minutes to play to tie the score.

Alec Warner kicked the extra point to put the Dragons ahead 39-38.

“I was scared to death,” said Fairland coach Dave Carroll. “We had so many players hurt and we moved so many people around, I didn’t know what to expect.

“Our kids hung in there and did what they had to do to win the game. It took a lot of heart. I think a lot of our young kids grew up.”

The game generated 861 total yards.

Tanner Sowards ran 17 times for 119 yards and scored three touchdowns. Jon Baise was 9 of 16 passing for 143 yards.

Quarterback Will McCollister was 8 of 24 for 278 yards and three touchdowns. Trey Wilds caught four passes for 198 yards and two scores.

The scoring went back-and-forth like two boxers in a title fight.

McCollister hit Jesse Lane with a 51-yard scoring pass to make it 6-0. Sowards came back with a 1-yard scoring run to tie the game.

Wilds and McCollister hooked up on a 77-yard scoring pass and then Sowards ran 17 for a touchdown to tie the game again at 12-12.

Rock Hill took a 19-12 halftime lead on a 9-yard scoring run in the second quarter and Cody Massie kicked the extra point.

Fairland tied the game again on a 13-yard run by Baise and Alec Warner’s conversion kick. McCollister had a 1-yard scoring run and Massie’s kick made it 26-19.

Alex Guzman returned an interception 32 yards as Fairland tied the game at 26, but McCollister and Wilds clicked on a 64-yard scoring pass and the Redmen led 32-26.

The Dragons made it 32-32 on a 5-yard pass from Baise to Sowards. Rock Hill regained the lead on a 12-yard run by McCollister. Fairland ends the season 4-6 and third in the OVC at 3-2. Rock Hill finishes 2-8 and 2-3.
