Making Fido’s first haircut a successful one

Fido is growing up, has all of his required vaccinations, and is ready for his first haircut.

You love your new little ball of fur and you want the best for him. You can help make his first groom a positive one by starting a home grooming routine.

Start by teaching Fido the basics of grooming. Gently touch him all over every day. Especially, don’t forget to play with his feet and ears.

Once he becomes comfortable with being touched, you’re ready to introduce him to brushing and combing.

Your pup will be ready for his first groom somewhere between 12 and 16 weeks.

His age will depend on his vaccination schedule, and the grooming shop’s requirements.

It is also a good idea to consult with your veterinarian on their vaccination recommendations.

Expect Fido’s first trip to the salon to be quite lengthy. It is extremely important for your puppy to trust his groomer and to become comfortable with the grooming process. Your groomer will give you a time to pick up your puppy or may request to call you when he is ready.

It is also essential that you do not come back early to check on Fido. While your intentions are good, it will only complicate the process.

If he sees you or hears you, he could become so overly excited that the groomer may not be able to finish the work. For the same reason, it would be counter productive to stay and watch his first groom.

On the way to the salon be upbeat and happy.

If you are stressed and keep telling him that, “It will be OK,” he will only become nervous and will feel apprehensive. You want him to associate grooming with fun and excitement.

During his grooming session he will be thoroughly bathed, dried, brushed, toe nails cut, and given a haircut. Your pup’s groom will be completed with a bandana or a bow, and if you want, a spray of pet cologne.

Between professional grooming sessions, you will need to brush your pup at home.

Your groomer will be able to recommend the correct brush and technique for your dog’s coat.

First impressions last a lifetime and this includes Fido’s first groom.

Find a groomer who is a good fit, do your part, and Fido will have years of happy haircuts. Remember, every dog deserves to be treated like a show dog.
