COAL GROVE — Marissa Stevens knows as a senior she is supposed to help her teammates.
She did just that on Senior Night.
Stevens racked up 35 assists for the game as the Coal Grove Lady Hornets swept an Ohio Valley Conference volleyball match from the Chesapeake Lady Panthers, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-15.
“My whole team did an excellent job of team work,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Trisha Damron.
“Marissa Stevens is going to be missed next season. Marissa is an exciting player to watch. She finds the hole on the floor and without me telling her. She is reading my mind and will sink it.”
Stevens’ dishing out 35 assists enabled Haley Johnson to have nine kills, Ashley Adkins eight kills, Cami Hillier five and Gabby Carpenter four.
Carpenter also led the team with 18 points while Stevens was credited with 13 points.
Damron praised the Lady Panthers and the job of their coach Dana Edwards.
“Coach Edwards brought a tough Chesapeake team with some tough servers for us to overcome, but in the end we pulled through,” said Damron.
“Coach Edwards is such an exciting coach to watch. There is never a dull moment when he is in the gym.”
In the reserve match, Coal Grove won 13-25, 25-18 and 25-14 as Darrien Hankins had 18 points and Cheyenne Bellomy 12.
Coal Grove (14-7) will play at Fairland at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Division III sectional tournament.
