FRANKLIN FURNACE — Football is a game of offense, defense, and special teams. The Green Bobcats understood that very well Friday night.
Three long scoring runs and a solid all-around effort led the Green Bobcats to a 38-12 win over the Fayetteville Perry Rockets.
“We played all three phases of the game as a team tonight. This was our best effort so far,” said Green coach Dan McDavid.
Green (3-2) amassed 406 total yards including 379 on the ground on just 31 attempts. They were 2-of-7 passing for 27 yards.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead.
Tyler Hughes bolted 55 yards for a touchdown just two minutes into the game to make it 6-0.
Hughes came back with 4:31 left in the quarter to run 8 yards for a score and Keith Stepp’s conversion kick made it 13-0.
It was Cody Bruce’s turn to make the long scoring run as he jetted 59 yards with 10:48 left in the half and Stepp’s conversion kick pushed the lead to 20-0.
The Rockets rallied as Tanner Williams scored on runs of 12 and 13 yards to make it 20-12 with just 1:35 to go in the half.
But fullback Chad Lewis pounded his way into the end zone with just 26 seconds left on the clock and it was 26-12 at the break.
The Bobcats put the game out of reach with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter.
Hughes darted 20 yards for a score midway through the quarter to make it 32-12 and Mike Avery turned in the longest scoring run of the night as he scooted 71 yards for a touchdown with 1:07 left on the clock.
The Bobcats begin Southern Ohio Conference play next Friday as they host Symmes Valley.
