McDERMOTT — There was an easy explanation why the Symmes Valley Vikings outscored the Northwest Mohawks 27-0 in the second half of Friday’s game.

“We didn’t put the ball on the ground two times in the second half,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb. “We fumbled two times going into the end zone from the two and the one.”

The unbeaten Vikings (5-0) led just 14-6 at the half before steamrolling the Mohawks in the second half en route to a 41-6 win.

The game started with the Vikings going 75 yards in just three plays as Hunter Boggs ran 3 yards for the touchdown with 4:49 on the clock. A 71-yard pass play from Cody Myers to D.J. Miller set up the score.

Northwest came back to tie the game with a 14-play, 64-yard drive capped by Luke Brown’s 26-yard scoring run.

The Vikings finally got the lead for good with 6:48 left in the half on a 66-yard pass from Myers to Evan Herrell. Myers threw to Jacob Patterson for the conversion and it was 14-6.

It was Northwest that put the ball on the ground to start the second half as the Vikings recovererd at the 25. Two plays later Myers threw to Boggs for a score and Eli Ash kicked the extra point for a 21-6 lead.

Symmes Valley put together a 7-play, 71-yard scoring drive on its next possession with Alec Herrell doing the scoring honors with a 12-yard run and it was 27-6.

After a punt pinned the Vikings back at their own 5-yard line, they went on a 95-yard scoring drive sparked by Patterson’s 72-yard run. Evan Herrell ran 6 yards for the touchdown and Ash’s kick made it 34-6.

The final touchdown came when Evan Herrell return a punt 84 yards for a touchdown with 6:21 to play.

“Our defense played very well in the second half. We made a couple of adjustments and the kids did a good job,” said Webb. “Even though we were in a downpour, our offense was still able to run and pass.”

The Vikings showed a lot of balance in their offense with 253 yards rushing and Myers was 4-of-7 passing for 165 yards to give them 418 total yards.

Patterson led the ground game with 112 yards on just five carries. Evan Herrell added 44 yards on four tries and Boggs had 39 yards on seven attempts.

Brown led Northwest (2-3) with 118 yards on 24 carries. The Mohawks had 160 yards rushing but none passing.
