The Sprayground made a huge splash on Sunday afternoon. About 100 people were present at the grand opening ceremony, which offered food and fun for all who attended.

The Friends of Ironton started working with the idea for the Friends Park Sprayground in 2009, and thanks to the help from the community, phase one was completed and the Sprayground was open to the public Sunday.

Viviane Khounlavong-Vallance, a Friend of Ironton, was pleased with the turnout.

“I think it was a great success,” she said. “We had a turnout of about 100 or so people. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. We couldn’t have planned it better.”

She said it was especially a hit with the children who were there. Rick McKnight, another Friend of Ironton, said there were about 30 to 40 children who were there splashing in the water.

There was a simple ceremony to turn on the water, and the rest of the time was devoted to just letting the children splash and have fun.

“They were all glad it was open,” McKnight said. “The kids had a smile on their face. It went good. Everything was fantastic.

McKnight said the Sprayground will be left on for the next couple of weeks, and will close for the winter, but will open again in the spring.
