Fighting Tiger golfers notch quad match victory

PINE GROVE — Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers returned to their home Ironton Country Club course and posted a season-best team score of 147 to win a quad match.

Ironton (34-3) easily outdistanced the field as Chesapeake shot a 166, West Union 168 and South Pont 214.

Andy Holtzapfel and Josh Zornes each played the course at a one-over par 36.

Jonathan Williams was just one shot back at 37 and Josh Mullins had a solid round of 38.

Josh Cooke and Mason Weisgarber each shot a respectable round of 42.

On Tuesday, Ironton beat Elliott County (Ky.) as Hidden Cove.

Ironton shot a 160 to win by 15 strokes.

Holtzpafel and Weisgarber each fired a 39 to lead the Fighting Tigers. Cooke was next with a 40 and Zornes had a 42.

Williams and Mullins each carded a 44.

Ironton hosts another quad match at 4 p.m. Monday against Elliott Count, Portsmouth and Wheelersburg. They travel to West Union on Tuesday.
