COAL GROVE — Go for a Saturday afternoon bike ride and help out a worthy cause. That’s the idea behind an event scheduled for July 31 at Wade’s Western Wear in Coal Grove.
The Bikers For Christ River Cities Chapter is hosting a benefit ride for Devon Hamilton, a 2010 graduate of Wheelersburg High School who suffered severe injuries including a broken neck in a car accident late last year.
Although she has some use of her arms and recently was able to stand on her feet, she is still unable to use her hands or walk. She needs constant medical care and uses a tracheal tube to breathe.
Devon’s father, Kevin, is a BFC member. The club has helped out since the time of the accident, first visiting and praying with her and her family in the hospital and later building a handicapped-accessible room to accommodate a wheelchair at the family’s home.
The bikers also escorted Devon to her high school graduation.
“We realize she has a lot of hospital bills still yet so we’re not quitting on her yet,” said Jim Harper, road captain of the BFC River Cities Chapter.
The 55-mile ride will start and end at Wade’s Western Wear. The ride should take about two hours, including a 30-minute restroom and water break.
Harper said the club expects between 250 and 300 motorcyclists to attend, although the event is open to those who don’t ride a motorcycle as well.
“We encourage bikers from the area to participate,” he said.
