Rally On The River organizers offered a major addition to the annual event’s music lineup Monday.
Friends of Ironton President Rick Jansen said the headline act for this year’s entertainment is Blackstone Cherry, the Edmonton, Ky., band known for such singles as “Lonely Train” and “Soulcreek.”
Blackstone Cherry will perform at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20. Friends of Ironton organizes the event each year, along with numerous corporate sponsors.
Jansen said he is thrilled to get a band of this caliber to perform at the rally and thinks the early 20s music group will draw an early 20s audience, something FOI is keen to do.
“The younger generation, 21-35 year-olds are the ones we’re trying to get to,” Jansen said. “And this group is absolutely huge for that age group.”
Jansen estimated the group may draw as many as 30,000 people to Ironton for the concert. Other entries on the music lineup: Blackberry Smoke, The Earthquakers and Unknown Hinson.
According to the group’s Web site, Blackstone Cherry’s music is a mixture of southern rock and modern hard rock. All of the members of the group come from musical families. Drummer John Fred Young’s father, Richard Young, is a founding member of the Kentucky Headhunters, while bassist/vocalist Jon Lawhon’s great-uncle was a jazz drummer. The group’s members began playing together while in high school.
The Rally On The River will be Aug. 19-21. The annual event draws 20,000-30,000 people each year either for motorcycle-related offerings or for the music entertainment.
