A Lawrence County man has died from injuries sustained in an accident last week.
Chaunchey Neal, of State Route 243 near Deering, was injured Tuesday while cleaning an ice machine at Tri City Ice in Ashland, Ky., where he was employed. The 29-year-old died Saturday at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Neal’s mother, Brenda Neal, said her son was cleaning the machine when a bolt came loose, causing the machine to fall on him. The machine knocked him into a puddle of water.
“His face was in that water and he didn’t have any oxygen going to his brain,” Neal said.
Greg Ray, Deputy Chief of the Ashland Fire Department, said when the department responded, the man was trapped under the machinery. Firefighters used wood cribbing and airbags to remove the machinery. They also assisted with CPR because the man was not breathing.
Neal was flown via helicopter to Cabell hospital.
Brenda Neal said her son was in a coma and never woke up.
His body is undergoing an autopsy by a medical examiner in Charleston, W.Va.
Neal leaves behind a wife, Tiffany. Neal had been a part-time employee of Tri City Ice for the past 11 years. He also worked at 7-Up Bottling. Neal was a 1999 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School.
