As far as Lena Brown is concerned, the “V” that’s her middle initial also stands for volunteering.
In addition to helping at the Ironton Senior Center off and on for the past three years, Brown also volunteers at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, helps people with income taxes and volunteers for the senior center in Flatwoods, Ky.
“Most anything that comes up, I’m always available to help,” Brown said.
The 80-year-old has been chosen as the Senior Citizen of the Year at the Ironton Senior Citizens Center, which is run by the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization. Each year during Senior Citizens Month in May, the center chooses one senior citizen for the honor.
“It seems to me that the Senior Citizen of the Year is a great honor and I’m very proud,” Brown said.
Before retiring three years ago, Brown worked each summer for several years at the Boardwalk at Put-in-Bay Island.
Carol Horner, site manager at the center, said Brown is constantly helping out at the center.
“She can do anything you want her to,” Horner said. “There’s no limit. She’s one of those jack-of-all-trades.”
Horner said choosing a recipient for the award can be difficult because there are several people who deserve it.
“Really you could chose any of them and come out ahead,” Horner said. “They all deserve to be senior citizens of the year.”
