Symmes Valley School will have its annual Walk for a Cure event Friday. The event, a smaller version of Relay for Life, will be at the elementary school from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Nine hundred students are participating in the walk. Over the past four years, Walk for a Cure has raised $80,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year’s goal is to raise another $20,000.
“It’s our biggest community service project that we do,” Coordinator Becky Bowling said. “There’s not another school that does that like this.”
The day will include special singing and a dinner for cancer survivors. The school is expecting about 90 survivors for the meal and a special lap around the track.
While the dinner for survivors is at capacity, Bowling encourages cancer survivors to participate in the lap at 1 p.m.
“We have students here with cancer,” Bowling said. “ We have teachers who are fighting cancer. We want to teach the kids to give back to the community. We think that’s part of their education.”
