Injuries minor following explosions

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. — Seven employees of the Special Metals Corp. plant near Burnaugh, Ky, in Boyd County, were treated for minor injuries following explosions at the plant.

The explosions were reported around 3 p.m. Monday. Workers reportedly heard three separate blasts inside a plant.

Five of the seven were taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center for burns and respiratory complaints. Another 10 workers were evaluated at the scene.

The Huntington plant is the company’s principal production site in the United States, supported by other facilities at Burnaugh, Ky., and Elkhart, Ind.

According to its Web site, “Special Metals offers the largest range of nickel alloys and product forms, as well cobalt alloys, to more than 10 worldwide markets.

Special Metals produces nickel alloys in all standard mill forms, from large ingots and billets to plate, sheet, strip, tubing, bar and wire, the latter of which includes core and filler wires for welding products.

The company has manufacturing and research facilities in the USA and Europe, sales offices in North America, Europe and Asia, and a distribution network including most of the industrialized countries of the world.
