Herbert Delong, 80, of Ironton, Herbie as he was affectionately called by friends was taken by angels wings to meet his Savioras he was surrounded by his family and friends, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Kitts Hill native was born Dec. 23, 1928, the son of the late Elisha and Ora Stacey Delong. He is survived by his wife, Marcella W. Dickess Delong, whom he married Oct. 18, 1954.
Herbie was a 1950 graduate of Kitts Hill High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran where he served in the 18th Infantry stationed in Germany. He was a former employee at Allied Chemical Nitrogen Division in South Point for 15 years and retired from Hecla Water after 23 years of service. He was a member of the Highway Baptist Church in Aid and attended Sharon Baptist Church in Ironton for the past several years. He loved sports, gardening and cooking.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant child; three brothers, Johnny Delong, Roscoe Delong, and Isaac Delong; and a sister, Norma Delawder.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by son and daughter-in-law, Timothy A. and Gina Delong of Kitts Hill; a son, Christopher H. Delong of Ironton; a daughter, Susan M. Ovadia of Gallipolis; six grandchildren, Stephanie F. Delong, Melissa D. Clutters, Staci A. Kirkpatrick, Ryan Tyler Kirkpatrick, Chelsea N. Delong, and Christopher Cody Delong; three great grandchildren, Brigham L. Clutters, Sidnee Clutters and Marleigh M. Burks; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Patricia Delong of Kitts Hill; special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Ruth Stephenson of Ironton, Nancy Johnson of Ironton, Harley and Laura Dickess of Dry Prong, Louisiana, Rhoda Dickess of Kitts Hill, Eleanor Dickess of South Point, Stepherene Stokes of Springfield, Jessie Delong of Kitts Hill, and Mae Delong of Kitts Hill.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Sugar Creek Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
