COAL GROVE — Mrs. Eva Chinn Spears 92, formerly of Coal Grove, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009 at Trinity Station in Flatwoods, Ky.
The Lavalette, W.Va., native was born Feb. 24, 1917 the daughter of the late Squire Russell and Jenny Howard Chinn. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Ray Spears who passed away in 1983.
Mrs. Spears was the last remaining member of the Coal Grove Class of 1935. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Ironton, where she served on several boards and was a very active in the Adventure Club. Mrs. Spears was also the secretary to the Lawrence County Commissioners for 18 years, was a Kentucky Colonel and served on the Board of Community Hospice.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a grandson, Ronald Clark; two sisters, Marie McGuire and Josephine Wilson and a brother, Lowell Chinn.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Paul Unrue of Brandon, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James A. and Brenda Spears of Kitts Hill and Russell and Phyllis Spears of Georgia; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren and a dear devoted friend that Mrs. Spears and her family considered a second daughter, Katy Bartram of Ironton.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Strawn officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ralph Carrico, Marvin Black, Kenneth McGuire, Rod Depriest, Dr. Kevin Hennessy and Rick Clark Unrue. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
