Writing a column for a newspaper can bring many rewards.
For Pastor Tim Throckmorten of the Plymouth Church of the Nazarene, this brought personal satisfaction, a time to laugh and a published book.
Throckmorten’s book, “You bought the book you name it: Holiday Musings with Tim Throckmorten” is a compilation of his holiday themed columns from the last six years and will be unveiled June 20.
“All of my columns, for the most part, are things I experienced in life and the ministry,” he said. “I can laugh at myself.”
Throckmorten said the columns are written for a secular audience that may have not had a huge Christian background. In order to communicate his message, he starts with a life story and draws the reader in with something to which they can relate and then connects it back to scripture.
“In communicating, you’re always trying to take a thought and communicate it,” Throckmorten said. “For me, it’s taking a story everyone can relate to.”
Some of the life experiences the pastor touches upon in the book is locking his keys in the car and being late for a meeting, his inability to admit when he needs to ask for directions, gift cards losing value and a case of a tricky Santa Clause.
“It’s a never ending supply, honestly,” he said.
Although he enjoys writing his columns, there has been multiple times when he has thought about quitting. However, he said he feels that writing is a part of the overall of purpose of his life.
“This is touching lives. This is helping people,” he said. “This is something I need to keep doing.”
There will be a book unveiling at Borders in the Barboursville Mall on June 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Although Throckmorten hopes people will come, he said he doesn’t really mind if the book does well or not.
“I didn’t plan on writing a book,” he said. “It’s not going to ruin my life if it flops.”
