IRONTON — For basketball enthusiasts, this weekend offers a chance for some hoop action and maybe a prize.

The Royal Photography 5 on 5 Basketball Classic will be Saturday and Sunday at the Ninth Street Park.

Basketball and Memorial Day weekend used to be a popular combination in Ironton but over the years the tournament organization changed hands and attendance dwindled. Then Royal Photography picked up the ball, so to speak, last year.

“We used to have this years ago and I remember seeing teams drive from Charleston,” Bruce Royal said. “This year we have two teams coming from Portsmouth and one from Charleston.”

Local players will get a chance to rub elbows with athletes from Marshall University and the University of Cincinnati as well as Ohio State football standout Marcus Williams. One new event this year: girls’ 3 on 3 basketball.

The hours will be 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday at 1 p.m. until the games are over (probably by 6 p.m.) Sunday. There will be giveaways and raffles. A 12-foot basketball hoop, a LeBron James Nike Basketball will be given away as well, along with various craft baskets.

From noon to 2 p.m. Sunday kids will be treated to free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks. There will also be inflatables for younger children.
