When they needed it most, the Symmes Valley Vikings found the help they needed.

Besides having three players in double figures, the Vikings got some key contributions off the bench from Justin Payne and Brandon Bowling in an 80-73 overtime win on Friday over the Sciotoville East Tartans in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Providing a bulk of the offense was Luke Taylor with 22 points, Kris Tibbs with 21 and Josh Craft had 15.

“We had some kids step for us. Justin Payne had one of his better games and Bowling did a nice job off the bench,” said Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.

“Craft and Taylor are sophomores, but they’ve really stepped up their game.”

Another big contributor was Dustin Wilson on the defensive end.

“(John) Garrett scored 10 points in the first quarter and then Wilson held him to eight points the rest of the game. He did a good job defensively for us,” said Carpenter.

East used Garrett’s 10 points to take a 22-16 lead. Tibbs scored seven points to keep the Vikings close.

Taylor got seven points in the second quarter but the Vikings trailed 38-30 at the half.

Symmes Valley (8-11, 7-7) came back to cut the deficit to 53-48 after three quarters and Taylor scored eight points in the fourth quarter to help tie the game at 64-64.

East scored the first four points of overtime, but Craft got four points to tie the game and the Vikings connected on 6-of-6 from the line in overtime.

“Craft took over in overtime,” said Carpenter.

Taylor also had 20 rebounds and three steals while Tibbs grabbed 14 rebounds.
