While everyone was caught up in the rivalry, Amanda Ruffner was keeping cool.
Ruffner remained calm as she scored 21 points as the Chesapeake Lady Panthers beat their rival Fairland Lady Dragons 56-42 Saturday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“This is a big rivalry. Fairland played hard and we played hard,” said Chesapeake coach Sammy Gue. “We didn’t do a good job of getting a body on them. We were excited to play but we lost our focus on defense.”
Chesapeake (10-7, 3-5) led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter. Ruffner then scored 10 points in the second quarter and the lead was 22-12 at the half.
Ruffner scored seven more in the third quarter and the Lady Panthers were in front 36-21.
Sarah Mayo and Allison Chapman combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter as Chesapeake outscored Fairland 20-17.
Kimmie Bennett added 13 points for Chesapeake and Sarah Mayo nine. Both players sat part of the game due to foul trouble.
Mackenzie Rucker scored 18 points — 13 in the second half — to lead Fairland (6-10, 1-6).
