James Johnson’s layup with 0.8 seconds remaining helped No. 6 Wake Forest upended No. 1 Duke 70-68 on Wednesday night.
Johnson finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Al-Farouq Aminu had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Demon Deacons (17-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference).
They bounced back from last week’s home loss that knocked them from No. 1 by leading the Blue Devils for nearly the entire way — before letting a late 13-point lead slip away and recovering just in time to claim the fifth victory over a top-ranked team in school history.
Kyle Singler had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Duke (18-2, 5-1), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped.
No. 2 Connecticut 71, DePaul 49
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Jerome Dyson scored 18 points and No. 2 Connecticut won its eighth straight.
The Huskies (19-1, 8-1 Big East) built a 14-point lead in the first half, only to watch it dwindle to six at the break. No problem. They started the second half with a 10-3 run to make it 51-38, sending the Blue Demons (8-13, 0-8) to their eighth straight loss.
Now, with No. 1 Duke losing to Wake Forest, UConn could grab the top ranking — assuming there’s no letdown against Providence on Saturday.
A.J. Price and Jeff Adrien scored 12 apiece for Connecticut and Hasheem Thabeet added 11. Adrien also grabbed 13 rebounds.
Dar Tucker scored 20 for DePaul, which is off to its worst conference start since the 1995-96 team dropped its first 12 Conference USA games.
No. 21 Villanova 67,
No. 3 Pittsburgh 57
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Reggie Redding had a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 21 Villanova to a win in the final college basketball game played in the Spectrum.
Dante Cunningham added 15 points for the Wildcats (16-4, 4-3 Big East), who beat a ranked team for the first time in five tries this season.
Sam Young had 14 points for the Panthers (18-2, 6-2), who had one field goal over the game’s final 5 minutes and were outrebounded 17-7 in the second half.
No. 5 North Carolina 80, Florida State 77
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Ty Lawson’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave North Carolina a win over Florida State.
Lawson took an inbounds pass with 3.2 seconds left and raced downcourt, swishing his shot at near full speed from the top of the circle.
The Tar Heels overcame 32 points from Florida State’s Toney Douglas, who scored 24 in the second half to help the Seminoles wipe out a 52-39 deficit and give themselves a chance to win.
The Seminoles (16-5, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) couldn’t get off a shot on their final possession, however, setting up Lawson’s buzzer-beater.
North Carolina (18-2, 4-2) was led by Lawson’s 21 points. Danny Green added 20.
No. 7 Louisville 80, South Florida 54
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Edgar Sosa scored 16 points, Samardo Samuels had 14 and Earl Clark added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals.
Terrence Williams had five points, 10 rebounds and six assists as Louisville (16-3, 7-0 Big East) won its eighth straight to keep pace with No. 8 Marquette atop the nation’s toughest conference.
Dominique Jones led the Bulls with 19 points and seven rebounds and Jesus Verdejo had 10 points, but South Florida (7-14, 2-6) simply couldn’t keep up in the second half as Louisville quickly broke open a close game.
Louisville’s 800th game at Freedom Hall looked an awful lot like most of the 799 that came before it. The Cardinals improved to 664-136 at the venerable gym with the victory.
No. 10 Xavier 69, Charlotte 47
CINCINNATI (AP) — B.J. Raymond scored 23 points, Kenny Frease added 17 points and Xavier won its ninth straight game.
C.J. Anderson had 10 points for Xavier (18-2, 6-0 A-10), which limited the 49ers to just four field goals in the first half. The Musketeers outrebounded Charlotte 48-28.
Charlotte (6-13, 1-5) was led by senior Charlie Coley who scored 12 points.
Providence 100, No. 15 Syracuse 94
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Sharaud Curry scored a season-high 22 points to lead six players in double figures, carrying Providence to an upset over Syracuse.
Marshon Brooks scored 17 points, and Geoff McDermott and Jonathan Kale each scored 15 for Providence (14-6, 6-2 Big East), which won for the seventh time in nine games and matched its best Big East start since 2000-01. Randall Hanke Weyinmi Efejuku had 12 points apiece for Providence.
Jonny Flynn led Syracuse (17-5, 5-4) with a career-high 35 points and Eric Devendorf had 27. The Orange lost their fourth in five games.
No. 18 Memphis 85, East Carolina 64
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Antonio Anderson scored a season-high 26 points for Memphis.
Tyreke Evans added 18 points for the Tigers (17-3, 6-0 Conference USA), who won their 48th consecutive game against conference competition.
Robert Dozier scored 11 points for Memphis, which made its first seven shots from the field on the way to a 19-8 advantage 5 minutes into the game. The Tigers, who led 45-31 at halftime, maintained a lead of at least eight points throughout the second half.
Jamar Abrams scored 18 points to lead the Pirates (10-9, 2-4), who lost for the eighth time in 10 games after starting the season 8-1.
Cincinnati 65, No. 25 Georgetown 57.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Deonta Vaughn scored 20 points, and Cincinnati extended Georgetown’s midseason misery by sending the Hoyas to their fourth straight loss.
The Hoyas (12-7, 3-5) were coming off a deflating 65-60 loss at Seton Hall, which hadn’t won a game in the Big East until Sunday. Afterward, coach John Thompson III proclaimed that his team was in a ‘‘bad situation right now.’’
It got a whole lot worse against Cincinnati (14-7, 4-4), which finally got a distinguishing win. The Bearcats were 0-2 against ranked teams this season.
Chris Wright scored 15 points for Georgetown, which saw its usually dependable defense fold down the stretch. Cincinnati shot 45.8 percent from the field.
It’s Georgetown’s longest losing streak since 2004-05, Thompson’s first season.
