SOUTH POINT — Iva Lillian Black Fields, 96, of South Point, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, surrounded by her family.
She was born March 20, 1912, in Durbin, Ky., a daughter of Sherman Cortsel and Sarah Frances Franklin Black.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Fields Jr.; a daughter, Ginger Davis; a grandson, Matthew Clinton Davis; three brothers and seven sisters.
She was a cornerstone founder of Durbin Cyrus Chapel. She was the oldest living member of the South Point United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, superintendent of the children’s department and a lay leader. She regularly attended South Point Church of the Nazarene where she was a member of the Golden Girls. She was active in 4-H and Girl Scouts and because of her involvement in 4-H, she had a bridge on Solida Road named in her honor. She was involved in the P.T.A. and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She was a former school teacher and was a former employee of the Lawrence County Senior Center from which she retired at age 90.
She is survived by a son, William C. Fields III; four daughters, Glo DeRaimo, Wanda Neudorfer-Pack and her husband, David, June Lester and her husband, Dan, and Dinah Geschke and her husband, Gary; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Layne and Pastor Phil Fannin officiating. Burial will follow in Fannin Cemetery on Bear Creek in Boyd County, Ky. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday and 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
