OAK HILL — Let’s get down to the nitty gritty.
The Rock Hill Redmen gave a gritty effort as they slipped past the Oak Hill Oaks 52-50 Tuesday in a non-league game.
“We preached we have to compete on every single possession on offense and defense and we did,” Rock Hill coach Adam Simpson said.
Matt Matney had 16 points and 3 steals to lead the Redmen to their first win in three outings.
Nathan Davenport scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to go with 6 steals. Mike Ison added 10 points.
Oak Hill (3-1) was led by Garland Stiltner with 15 points. Casey Love scored 14 points.
“We had to keep Stiltner under control. He was the key to the team. (Mike) Ison and (Wes) Persin did a nice job on him,” Simpson said. “Eli Kitchen came in and did a good job off the bench, too.”
Matney had 6 points and Davenport 4 in the first quarter as Rock Hill went ahead 13-9.
Andrew Stumbo and Matney combined for 9 points in the quarter quarter and it was 26-22 at the break.
Oak Hill came back in the third quarter to draw within 38-37, but Ison and Stumbo scored 5 points each, Mark DePriest hit two clutch foul shots and Aaron Butler one as Rock Hill took the lead.
The Redmen were just 10 of 22 from the foul line for the game.
Rock Hill had lost to a Norm Persin-coached team 26 straight times. Persin moved from Chesapeake to Oak Hill this season.
“That was a good win for us. They had a packed house and it was a great atmosphere,” Simpson said.
