Ironton golfers start slow

The favorite lived up to its billing.
West Union was the odds-on favorite to win the Ironton Invitational on Monday, and the Dragons did just that in relative easy fashion by 39 strokes.
“West Union has a really strong team. They were really good last year and they have everyone back. They’re the team to beat in our district,” Ironton coach Jeff Kerns said.
Ironton’s Nathan Kerns West Union’s Richmond tied with identical scores of 72, but Kerns won a playoff to take medalist honors.
Seth Christian was just two strokes back for Ironton at 74.
While West Union was coasting to the win, South Point took second place with a 345 team scored. Lewis had a 78 to lead the Pointers.
North Adams was third at 358 followed by Ironton at 361, Gallipolis 374 and Fairland 401. River Valley was disqualified as a team due to having only three golfers.
Russell shot an 89 to lead the Dragons.
In a duel match on Wednesday, Jackson edged Ironton 347 to 355.
Kerns shot an even par 70 to take medalist honors while Seth Christian carded an 81. Aaron Christian had a 98 and Michael Filkins a 106 to complete the top four scorers.
