GREENUP, Ky. — Two men wanted in connection with area bank robberies are behind bars today in Greenup, Ky.

Greenup Police Chief Roger Russell said Willis Cochran, 44, of 6202 State Route 93, Ironton and Mark Gibson, 32, of Marion, were taken into custody just after 7 p.m. Tuesday evening by two of his officers who spotted the two men walking along U.S. 23 near the Budget Inn.

“Apparently they just got tired of running,” Russell said. “They went first to Goodwill and bought a change of clothes and then they went walking on U.S. 23.”

Russell said the two men did not try to run once they were spotted and were arrested without incident.

“They gave the wrong names at first and played the game a little bit I guess,” he said.

When they changed their clothes they must have cleaned out the pockets in their old duds: When they were apprehended, police say the two men had several thousand dollars in their possession.

Gibson is being charged with first-degree robbery and Cochran is being charged with complicity to robbery in connection with the hold up of a bank in Russell, Ky., Monday. They are likely to be arraigned today in Greenup County District Court before judge Robert Conley.

They will also face charges in Scioto County in connection with the robbery of the Desco Federal Credit Union in Wheelersburg Tuesday.

Additionally, Cochran is also wanted by Ironton Police in connection with the hold up of the U.S. Bank on Third and Jones streets in March. Police allege he was the driver of the getaway car for Natalie Carter, of Greenup, who was arrested a couple of weeks after the robbery.

Carter pleaded guilty in May to her part in the crime and is expected to testify against Cochran when he is prosecuted for his part in the robbery. Police say Cochran is also wanted in connection with a bank robbery in Jackson.
