PROCTORVILLE — Brenna Morris had beginner’s luck Tuesday night at the Lawrence County Fair.
The 9-year-old member of the Starlite 4-H group took top honors with her entry in the fair’s goat show.
Morris said she was pretty surprised when she found out she had won. In fact, when the judge pointed her out of the group competing, she wasn’t even sure what it meant.
“He (the judge) pointed at me and I didn’t know what he was doing.
I looked over at my dad and he said ‘You won,’ then I got really excited,” Morris said.
Her goat, Powerade, was not her strongest entry in the competition, she thought. She thought her other goat had a much better chance of winning.
Her first year of 4-H has been a learning experience and she admitted that it has been a lot of hard work. The daily feeding and general upkeep of the goat takes a lot of time, Morris said.
Winning was all in the family Tuesday. Earlier in the day, her cousin, Michael Williams, was the grand champion in the swine competition.
He also took fourth place honors.
“I told his (Williams) dad that I wanted to be just like him and that I was going win, too,” Morris said with a smile.
Goat show reserve champion was Mariah Brock, a member of the Getaway Go-getters.
In the goat showmanship competition, Timmy Humphrey was named senior goat showman and Kyle Coleman was named junior goat showman.
