PROCTORVILLE — If Tuesday’s game had been a telethon, the Fairland Dragons would have reached their goal.

The Dragons got plenty of contributions as they beat the Portsmouth Trojans 6-2 in the Division III sectional tournament.

“It was a good team win. Everyone made some key defensive plays or did something to help,” Fairland coach Roger Snyder said.

Fairland, 13-6, plays at Chesapeake Friday in the sectional finals.

Nick Zundel pitched a five-hitter to get the win. He struck out four and walked two. Only one run was earned.

“He pitched well. He didn’t have the strikeouts, but he kept them off-balance,” Snyder said.

After a scoreless first inning, Fairland got four runs in the second inning.

Spencer Baise doubled with one out, Corey Blankenship was hit by a pitch and Zundel singled to load the bases.

“Spencer’s hit was big. He got us going,” Snyder said.

Cole Hatfield walked to force in a run and Adam Fuller smacked a two-run single. Adam Berry then squeezed home Hatfield.

Portsmouth got a run in the top of the third inning when John Walker reached on an error and came home on a double by Howard Harcha.

Fairland answered as Chris Barnett singled, moved up on a passed ball and came home on a hit by Ethan Long.

The Trojans made it 5-2 in the fifth when Cody Collins walked and John Walker tripled.

But the Dragons got the run back in the sixth inning when Baise doubled and Hatfield singled.
