Local basketball stars highlight rosters for Ohio-WV series

CHESAPEAKE — The River Rivalry continues.

The annual Ohio vs. West Virginia senior all-star basketball series resumes Friday and Saturday at alternate sites in the two states.

Friday’s games will be at Chesapeake High School and then shift to Charleston (W.Va.) Catholic High School on Saturday.

Some of the top local players will be featured on the Ohio teams along with Ironton’s Mark LaFon serving as the Ohio boys’ head coach and South Point’s Dave Adams at the girls’ coach. Gene Layton of River Valley will be the boys’ assistant and Penny Huff of South Point will assist Adams.

Ironton’s three-time All-Ohio star Sara Hacker will play for the Ohio girls before crossing the river to play in West Virginia at Glenville State in college.

South Point’s all-district performer Jessi Craft and high-scoring Jennifer Grandy of Trimble, who signed with Shawnee State, will be featured on the Ohio team, too.

Kristen Bradshaw of Northwest, who will play at Wright State, joins the girls’ roster. Tyra Grant, the Youngstown Ursuline star who signed with Penn State, has committed to play.

Ironton’s first team All-Ohio guard and district Player of the Year Dennis Gagai will follow Hacker’s lead. Gagai will play at West Virginia University next fall.

Chesapeake’s two-time All-Ohio guard P.J. Rase, who signed with Ohio Dominican, will join Gagai on the Ohio team along with Western Carolina signee Brigham Waginger who played for three seasons at Ironton before moving to South Webster last season.

Another former Panther on the team will be Justin Porter who has will play at Rio Grande as well as Green senior point guard Derek Lewis who is headed for Shawnee State.

South Point all-district center Jeremiah Taylor rounds out the local standouts on the Ohio roster.

Another familiar face on the Ohio roster will be Nate Davis of Bellaire who amassed 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during his career.

Tickets are $5 at the door. The girls’ games begin at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30.
