Rebels get by Flyers

Maybe the St. Joseph Flyers forgot to pay their long distance bill.
The Flyers were 23 of 50 from the field but just 3 of 19 from outside the lane including one of 12 from 3-point range as they lost 68-65 to the South Gallia Rebels Friday.
“We didn’t shoot well from outside and and they shot well from the outside. And we missed too many foul shots again,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead but it was their only lead of the game.
South Gallia used 10 points by Dustin McCombs to take a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A 7-0 run by the Flyers tied the game at 22-22 with 2:09 left in the half. The Rebels were able to go up 27-24 at the break.
McCombs scored 10 points in the third quarter including a 3-pointer as South Gallia open up a 13-point lead. St. Joseph trailed 49-37 at the end of the third quarter.
However, leading scorer Alex Swarts fouled out with 57 seconds left in the third quarter and left St. Joseph to battle back without his services.
Ryan Staton came off the bench to score 13 points including seven straight as the Flyers got within 49-45.
St. Joseph trailed 59-54 when Curt Waugh hit a 3-pointer that proved to be the final dagger.
The Flyers had four turnovers in the final two minutes to erase any hopes of a comeback.
“We had our shot at the end of the game to win it but we kept turning the ball over. We haven’t been doing that. We just got in a hurry with everything we were doing because we were down,” Hacker said.
Staton finished with 21 points. Swarts had 14 points and five rebounds, Michael Basedow 11 points and five rebounds, and Cory Lewis had 10 points.
Ryan Schwab contributed six rebounds and six assists.
“Staton played excellent. We had Swarts and Addis in foul trouble and Ryan really stepped it up. We just couldn’t get anything to fall from the outside,” Hacker said.
McCombs, who fouled out with 7:01 to play, led all scorers with 24 points.Waugh had 21 points and Tyler Duncan added 10 points.
