Redmen use depth to pound out win over SP

PEDRO - Now, that's what you call depth.

Utilizing two offensive line units, the Rock Hill Redmen beat down the South Point Pointers 33-6 Friday in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.

"We kind of wore them down. We just kept pounding it at them. We just kept running bodies at them. We probably played nine of 10 players against them," Redmen coach Todd Knipp said. "They all did a good job."

Rock Hill led just 7-0 at the half and the Pointers quarterback Chris Smith was 8 of 21 for 122 yards. But the Redmen limited Smith to 65 yards passing in the second half and took control with their running game.

"The biggest thing was when (Smith) would run we began to contain him. We played really physical on both sides of the ball," Knipp said.

Rock Hill scored in the first quarter when quarterback Jarrod Casey ran 1 yard for a touchdown. T.J. Blagg kicked the extra point and it was 7-0.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Redmen drove 91 yards in 16 plays on their first possession of the second half. K.C. Christian scored on a 1-yard run to cap the drive and it was 13-0.

The lead went to 20-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter when Josh "Deuce" Moore ran 14 yards for the touchdown. Blagg kicked the conversion.

South Point returned the kickoff to the Rock Hill 49 and on the first play Smith hooked up with Jeremiah Taylor on a touchdown pass and it was 20-6.

After the kickoff, Rock Hill drove 81 yards in 15 plays with T.J. Blagg scoring on a 2-yard run to cap the drive.

Two plays after the ensuing kickoff, defensive end Josh Moore stripped Smith of the football and ran it back 26 yards to the 1-yard line.

Moore also did the scoring honors on the next play and the Redmen were up 33-6.

"Our kids really stepped up. We made tackles when we needed, we were able to get pressure on them. We knew they were going to hit one big play. If we could limit them to one big play, we felt pretty good," Knipp said.

Rock Hill (5-1) finished with 335 total yards including 300 on the ground. Christian and Blagg both went over 100 yards rushing as Christian ran 23 times for 129 and Blagg 19 times for 117.
