CHESAPEAKE - Amidst the airplane rides, antique cars, skydivers and music, two youth took their hobby to the skies at the Lawrence County Airpark Saturday.

And they put on quite a show.

Kelly Sullivan of Westmoreland brought his son, Chris, and the youth's friend Ronnie Black to the Lawrence County Airpark's Fly-In, Cruise-In, Camp-In with model airplanes in hand.

The three are members of the Tri-State Model Flyers, a club located in Cannonsburg, Ky.

"It teaches them the basics of aeronautics," Kelly Sullivan said as to why they got involved in the hobby.

Sullivan also said it gives the youth something to do. Sullivan himself is no stranger to the hobby, which he also participated in when he was younger. The youth fly the remote controlled airplanes at the club every weekend, but came to the event at the airport this weekend.

The Tri-State Pilots Association hosted the event which was sponsored by Bedford South Point Ford and Advance Auto Parts. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Airport Manager Nelson Whitt said they were pleased with the turnout.

As the airport shut down, the youth were preparing to take to the field and put their planes in the air. Kelly Sullivan said they are only going to fly for about 20 minutes.

"The more we fly, the better," Chris Sullivan said. "We'll just get better at it."

Ronnie Black said he and Sullivan started flying at about the same time, and that his favorite thing about the hobby is that it is just really fun.

Sullivan agreed with his friend.

"It's the best thing I've ever done," Chris said. "It's the only thing we ever do."

Makayla Howard, 7, said that she thought the model airplanes were cool and she enjoyed watching the youth fly them. This is her second time at the airport, as she came to an event back in the summer.

Today she also took an airplane ride.

"I liked it," she said. "He tips us."
