Greenbo Park to host antique show Nov. 4-5

GREENUP, Ky. - Greenbo Lake State Resort Park at Greenup will be hosting its annual antique show the weekend of Nov. 4-5.

The show will run Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The booths will be located in the Jesse Stuart Lodge. There will also be an antique tractor and farm machinery show at the community pool parking lot.

Greenbo Lake State Resort Park has a lodge, restaurant and campground. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is located just seven miles off of Highway 23, known as “The Country Music Highway.”

Lawrence 7 to undergo paving

Chillicothe - Lane restrictions will be in effect on state Route 7 in Lawrence County next week as crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation undertake a maintenance project along the north corridor of the route.

Crews from ODOT’s Lawrence County Highway Maintenance Facility will be paving S.R. 7 between the 10.5 and 14.0-mile markers, beginning just north of the Rome Township area and Fairland East Elementary and continuing to the village of Athalia.

Paving operations are scheduled to start Monday and continue through the end of the work day Thursday with crews working four, 10-hour days, and throughout construction, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the aid of flaggers.

Although the route will be open to one lane of two-way traffic, motorists are advised to expect periodic delays.

Communication expert to speak at SSU

Sonya Hamlin, communication expert and author of “How to Talk So People Listen: Connecting in Today’s Workplace,” will share her communication skills at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the Flohr Lecture Hall in SSU’s Clark Memorial Library.

Hamlin has been invited to speak as part of the Kricker Lecture Series.

President of Sonya Hamlin Communications, Hamlin’s major focus is on business communication, both verbal and visual.

Hamlin is a pioneer in the field of courtroom communication, having created a course at the Harvard Law School in 1978.

She lectures worldwide and consults on cases with law firms, consulting on juries and advocacy skills, preparing witnesses, developing strategies and creating visual presentations of evidence.

A two-time Emmy Award winner, Hamlin’s television career included hosting and co-producing her own daily TV talk show, “The Sonya Hamlin Show” in Boston, directing, writing, producing and filming television documentaries.

She was also the first cultural reporter on the news in the United States.

The lecture is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Kricker Fund, part of the Scioto County Area Foundation, and administered by the SSU Development Foundation.

Kentucky public radio to have fund drive

MOREHEAD, Ky. —Morehead State Public Radio has announced its dates for the 2007 Fall Fund Drive, Sept. 29 through Oct. 5. As part of the fall fundraiser, MSPR will bring back its third annual online auction running Wednesday, Sept. 26 through Wednesday, Oct. 3. The auction will begin at noon on Sept. 26 and end at 4 p.m. on Oct. 3. The auction will be available at www.msuradio.com.

Morehead State Public Radio will ask listeners to support the programming with their financial gifts during the 2007 Fall Fund Drive. Financial gifts to MSPR also help support its student work-study program and the purchase of new equipment and supplies. Wayne National offers free use Sept. 29

Nelsonville — Every year since 1995, the last Saturday in September has been known as National Public Lands Day, and in honor of this day, use of the Wayne National Forest’s recreation sites and trails is free.

On Saturday, Sept. 29 no permits are required to ride all-terrain vehicle, horse, and mountain bike trails. Visitors can camp at developed campgrounds for no charge except for those that can be reserved on the national reservation system.

The Forest offers free use of picnic sites and other day-use sites except for canoe rentals at Lake Vesuvius or group picnic shelters that are reserved on the national reservation system.

The Wayne National Forest offers the public several recreation and trail opportunities in southeastern Ohio. The Forest has approximately 74 miles of horse trails, 121 miles of all-terrain vehicle trails, 200 miles of mountain bike trails, and 366 miles of hiking trails. The Wayne also has 47 recreation sites that include campgrounds, picnic sites and shelters, boat launches and swim sites.

The National Environmental Education Foundation sponsors Public Lands Day with support of nine federal agencies. The event continues the legacy begun by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which enrolled three million Americans to maintain and improve public lands during the Great Depression.

Carey to hold open door session locally

COLUMBUS — State Sen. John Carey, R-Wellston, will hold an open door session on Monday, Oct. 1 from 2-3 p.m. at the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library’s Eastern Branch located at 410 Elizabeth Street in Proctorville.

During this session, constituents from the 17th Senate District will have the opportunity to speak with Carey about issues concerning state government and discuss any personal matters regarding state agencies or issues concerning the region. All residents are encouraged to attend and participate in the open forum.

“I feel that these meetings are very important in listening to all my constituents” Carey said.

“I have a large district and these open door sessions allow me to hear from each and every one of the counties I represent.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters recruiting

ASHLAND, Ky. — Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State is recruiting mentors to serve as Big Brothers and Big Sisters for their school-based mentoring and community based programs.

Big Brothers are especially needed as BBBS has 30 boys on the waiting list. However, Big Sister applicants are welcomed as well.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring program serving at-risk children needing friendship and guidance in both a School-Based Mentoring Program and a Community Based Program in the Ashland, Ironton, and Huntington area.
