Friends seek volunteers for bike rally

The Friends of Ironton are days away from beginning its Rally on the River, but organizers are still trying to find a few friends of their own - some helpful volunteers to help the event run.

The motorcycle rally in Ironton will be Aug. 18-21 and organizers say they expect about 20,000 visitors, which means they'll need a few helping hands.

Madolin Blackwell, a member of the Friends of Ironton civic group, is managing volunteers for the rally.

Volunteers work 2- to 3-hour shifts, selling beverages, T-shirts and other items. They will also be checking identification at the event making sure that everyone with a legal beverage is legal.

"It isn't anything that's really difficult," Blackwell said. "Just someone who can run a copy machine and write a number down is what we need."

Blackwell said she needs volunteers the most for Friday morning and afternoon, when many Irontonians are at work.

Blackwell has had 50 volunteers so far, but she said another 10 to 20 would really help keep things rolling along smoothly.

"Oh yes, it's fun!" Blackwell said. "I volunteered last year and had no idea what I was getting involved in, and it was just a really nice event. So, I volunteered again this year."

When not working, volunteers can take in some of the other activities the rally has to offer, such as a car show, or the chance to see Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s racecar on display.

"Second Helping," a Lynard Skynard tribute band, will also be on hand to supply some rocking background music. Those who want to unwind with some tunes that are a little more laid back can check out acoustic guitarist Tuck Pence.

After the relaxation, Team FMX will amp the crowds up with its explosive brand of freestyle motocross.

The Rally on the River will also include a pancake breakfast, primitive camping and biker games.

Anyone who would like to volunteer can contact Madolin Blackwell at (740) 532-5822. She said she will be accepting able bodies until the day of the event.
