South Point SL holds on to win District 11 title

SOUTH WEBSTER - Haven't I seen you somewhere before?

In yet another meeting between South Point and Ironton, it was South Point that held on for a 10-6 win Friday to win the District 11 Senior League All-Star tournament.

Ironton came out of the loser's bracket and beat South Point 7-1 on Thursday to force the decisive championship game. Including four regular season games, Friday's game was the seventh meeting this season between the two teams. They split the previous six games, one a 2-0 win by South Point to open the tournament.

"I told (Ironton coach) John (Holtzapfel) I was getting tired of seeing him," South Point manager D.L. McWhorter said with a chuckle. "We certainly knew what each other could do."

The title puts South Point in the state tournament which will be held at South Webster starting Friday. South Point drew a bye in the first round and will play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

South Point got a run in the second inning on a triple by Tyler Smith when Kyle Hughes reached on an error.

In the third inning, South Point went up 3-0 on an infield hit by Jacob Orlando and a two-run homer by Anthony Ross.

With one out in the top of the fifth inning, T.J. Keith beat out an infield hit for Ironton's first baserunner. Drew Kuehne walked and Ryan Schwab looped a hit into right field to score Keith and it was 3-1.

Chris Brown doubled and Chase McWhorter had an RBI single in the bottom of the inning as South Point built a 4-1 lead.

Ironton got that run back in the top of the sixth inning when Ryan Waginger was safe on a two-out error and Nick Lewis grounded a run-scoring single up the middle.

But in the bottom of the inning, South Point scored six times to open up a 10-2 lead.

Smith singled, Hughes doubled and Jacob Seagraves was safe on an error as two runs scored. Brown got a base hit, Orlando walked and Ross had a two-run double. McWhorter capped the rally with an RBI single.

But Ironton wouldn't quit.

In the top of the seventh inning, Drew Kuehne was safe on an error, Seth Kuehne walked, Schwab had a hit that scored two runs and Tanner Reed cranked a two-run homer.

South Point pitcher Trenton Moore settled down and was able to retire three of the next four batters to end the game.

Moore got the win with a four-hitter. He struck out 11 and walked three.

Waginger took the loss. He struck out two, walked four and gave up six hits in five-plus innings worked.
