Fighting Tigers, Panthers lead Southeast all-district selections

Let the records speak for themselves.

Teams in the Southeast district put up some impressive records. Their players put up some impressive numbers. It all made for an impressive team.

A strong group of players were selected to the Associated Press Southeast Ohio All-District basketball teams announced Friday.

Division III proved extremely strong led by Ironton with the school's first-ever unbeaten regular season at 20-0. The outstanding performance against an extremely challenging schedule earned Ironton third-year mentor Roger Zornes his second district Coach of the Year honor.

Zornes is currently 61-8 in his three seasons and has 511 career wins.

Good teams feature good players and Ironton led the selections with four boys and five girls.

Juniors Brigham Waginger and Dennis Gagai were named to the first team, senior Joe Zornes was second team, and senior Cliff Howard was honorable mention.

Chesapeake, which posted a 19-1 record, had junior P.J. Rase on the first team, senior Brennan Hall on the second team, and senior Trent Finley and junior Justin Porter honorable mention.

South Point's junior Jeremiah Taylor was a third team selection and junior teammate J.T. Terry honorable mention.

Coal Grove junior guard Randy Wise was named honorable mention.

North Adams, 19-1, was voted three players to the team while Brett Beuchler of Eastern Brown, 15-5, was named the Player of the Year with a 23.0 scoring average.

In the boys Division II, Rock Hill's K.C. Christian was a second team choice.

Green junior guard Derek Lewis was second team in the boys' Division IV picks and junior teammate Brian Ramey a third team member. Senior Adam Sparks was honorable mention.

Symmes Valley senior guard Justin Ferguson was a third team choice while senior Justin Holland and sophomore Kyle Meadows were honorable mention.

South Webster's Nick Aldridge was the Player of the Year for the second straight season.

The Ironton girls, with a record regular season mark of 19-1, landed senior Andrea Rudmann on the Division III first team, junior Sara Hacker on the second team, sophomore Mandi Boykin on the third unit and senior Sarah Cartmell and junior Danielle Henderson honorable mention.

South Point, with a best-ever 18-2 record in the regular season, had senior Alisha Bridges on the first team, Jessica Craft on the third team, and Latisha Koukos was honorable mention.

Coal Grove sophomore Chelsea Markins was named to the second team and Samantha Hall was honorable mention.

Chesapeake landed seniors Noelle Wood, Brittany Boyle and sophomore Sara Rucker on the honorable mention list.

Oak Hill, 20-0 and ranked No. 1 in the AP poll, was led by Alyssa Hammond who was the Player of the Year for the second straight season.

The Lady Oaks Sarah Carsten won Coach of the Year over Ironton's Amy Hughes.

In girls Division II, Fairland junior Brianna Davis was named to the second team. Senior Kara Riley and sophomore Megan Auxier were honorable mention.

Rock Hill junior Mandi McKenzie was honorable mention.

Ironton St. Joseph senior center Christina Harvey was a first team selection in Division IV.

Symmes Valley senior Leslie Floyd was a second team choice and junior Rebecca Capper was voted to the third team.

Green senior Leigh Ann Williams was a second team selection and sophomore Elista Hall third team.

The girls Div. IV distirct Player of the Year was Jennifer Grandy of Trimble.
