Cold second-half shooting plagues Female Flyers in loss to Fairview

Okay, who switched baskets at halftime?

The St. Joseph Female Flyers saw a halftime lead disappear in the second half as they had just two field goals in the second half in a 55-40 loss to the Fairview (Ky.) Lady Eagles Thursday.

St. Joseph had two field goals in the third quarter and was 0-for-8 in the fourth quarter.

"We couldn't buy a basket the second half," Flyers coach B.J. Hannon said. "And we got in foul trouble. That hurt us."

Christina Harvey scored 20 points to lead the Female Flyers (8-10). Harvey, Raven Blake and Mallory Hasenauer all fouled out for St. Joseph.

Fairview's Carissa Evans had a game-high 26 points to lead all scorers. Ally Boyd added 14 points for the Eagles.

The Female Flyers were up 6-3 when Fairview went on a 7-0 run capped by Boyd's 3-pointer to lead 10-6. Hasenauer sank two foul shots with 44 seconds left to cut the deficit to 10-8.

Hasenauer tied the game to start the second quarter as St. Joseph scored 9 unanswered points. A free throw by Blake put the lead at 17-10 with 5:02 left in the half.

Lindsay Dressel hit a foul shot and Charleigh Haas scored to put St. Joseph up 23-18 and Harvey's basket had the lead at 25-20. Brandi Mills sank two free throws with 26 seconds left in the half and it was 25-22 at the break.

Hasenauer converted a 3-point play to put St. Joseph up 28-22. After Evans and the Flyers Danielle Blair traded baskets, Fairview scored 8 straight points and led 32-30 with 1:20 left in the third quarter.

It was 34-32 at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Harvey sank four foul shots to put St. Joseph up 36-34. Evans tied the game and Boyd converted a 3-point play as Fairview took the lead for good at 39-36 with 5:54 to go.

Harvey's two foul shots with 5:27 on the clock got St. Joseph within 40-38, but Fairview went 6 of 6 from the line in a 10-0 run and it was 50-38.

Dressel's two foul shots made it 50-40 with two minutes left, but the Flyers would get no closer.

The Female Flyers were 7 of 20 from the line in the first half but 11 of 11 in the second half.

St. Joseph plays Racine Southern at 7 p.m. Monday at Athens High School in the sectional tournament.
