CHILLICOTHE - Tough guys.

The competition was tough, but seven area wrestlers for the Chesapeake Panthers and Fairland Dragons were tough enough to advance in the Southeast sectional tournament Saturday.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the district meet Friday and Saturday at Xenia.

Four Panthers advanced as Brad Eldred was second in the 171-pound division, Bryan Eldred third at 189 and Erik McWhorter third at 215, and Tim Wentz was fourth in the 160 class.

Chesapeake's Thomas Lewis was fifth in the 112 class and Lonnie McDonald sixth in the 135 division.

"We had a possibility of getting six or seven, and then after the seeding I thought five or six," Panthers coach Phil Davis said. "As it worked out, we could have had five.

"I was really pleased with Bryan Eldred. He had a really tough weight class, and McWhorter had a tough class. No one really wrestled bad. There were a lot of guys back and it's tough to beat those guys."

Advancing for Fairland were Camron Clark in the 135-pound class, Tim Layne at 152 and Chuck Wentz at 103. Clark was second, Layne third and Wentz fourth.

Also placing for the Dragons were Michael Evans at 119 and Chad Kilgore at 275. Both were fifth.

"That was pretty good considering half the team placed. It's the best competition we've seen all year except maybe in the WSAZ tournament. We have one of the toughest districts in the state in Division III," Fairland coach Chuck Wentz said.

"Layne made a mistake and got caught on his back. He probably should have won. But he's stepped up all year. Camron has

wrestled well. He has a chance, but the competition will be tough. Chuckie is just a sophomore so this has been a good experience."

Nelsonville-York won the team title. Chesapeake placed seventh and Fairland was eighth.

"We had three or four injuries late in the season that have hurt us. If we don't lose them, we would have place a lot higher," coach Wentz said.
