SCIOTOVILLE - They're not moving fast, but they are moving forward.
The St. Joseph Flyers continued to battle their youthful struggles, but coach Kevin Hacker was not discouraged after Tuesday's 72-59 loss to the Portsmouth East Tartans.
"We just ran out of gas," Hacker said. "We missed two easy bunnies to start the second half or we're right there.
"We're getting better, we just have to keep coming. We've been in every game but one all season."
Andrew Copley had 28 points to lead East (4-3) while Brent Downing had 13 points. Jeff Swick and Travis Riggs added 12 points each.
Michael Basedow had 22 points to pace the Flyers (1-7). Ryan Schwab, Corey Lewis, Jeremy Addis all scored 8 points each.
"Basedow really stepped up and Kurt Crum came off the bench and did a nice job defensively. I was pleased with our defensive effort," Hacker said.
Basedow had 6 points in the first quarter to offset 7 points by Copley and it was 15-15.
Downing got 8 points in the second quarter as East went up 35-34 at the half. Addis scored 6 points for the Flyers.
East outscored the Flyers 18-12 in the third quarter as Copley got 9 points and it was 53-46.
Copley scored 7 points in the fourth quarter for East to eliminate 8 points by Basedow.
