Despite a lackluster performance, the Ironton Fighting Tigers managed to beat the Gallipolis Blue Devils 60-42 Tuesday.

"It was one of those nights," Ironton coach Roger Zornes said. "We weren't ready to play. We weren't getting back on defense. We were jogging down the floor and the result was them getting a layup."

Cliff Howard had a solid game for Ironton with 15 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Dennis Gagai scored 13 points with five rebounds while Brigham Waginger added 12 points.

"We didn't start out well, but after coach Zornes gave us a little talk at halftime, we started to play a little better," Howard said.

James Haggerty had 10 points and Alex Kyger 8 for the Blue Devils, 2-3.

Ironton (4-0) trailed 6-2 early before Brigham Waginger converted a three-point play. He and Dennis Gagai had layups as the lead was 9-6.

A layup by Marcus Williams off a pass from Joe Zornes put Ironton up 13-11 at the end of the quarter.

An 11-0 run in the second quarter extended Ironton's lead to 28-14 with 1:57 left in the half. Haggerty's basket just before the half made it a 28-19 spread at the break.

Ironton built a 44-29 lead on a follow up shot by Howard and a free throw with 2:54 left in the third quarter.

Waginger sank three foul shots in the final minute of the quarter and Ironton led 50-30 at the end of the buzzer.

Gallipolis got no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

One problem for Ironton in the fourth quarter was nine turnovers and 24 for the game.

"We didn't shoot very well and we had more turnovers in the fourth quarter than we had the entire first half. We didn't look for the open man and threw the ball away," coach Zornes said.
