12 area players named All-Ohio in Div. IV

Any coach would like to have the recipe to make this dozen.

A total of 12 area football players were named Tuesday to the Associated Press Division IV All-Ohio football team.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers led the selections with seven All-Ohio members including three on the first team.

Senior defensive back Marcus Williams, senior tight end Patrick Kouns and junior running back Darius Lewis were all on the first team.

Named to the All-Ohio special mention list were senior wide receiver Shane Kerns, senior center Ryan Walker, senior defensive lineman Josh Carty and senior linebacker Adam Ferguson.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Williams was an all-district first team defensive back selection and runner-up in the Defensive Player of the Year award. The 6-2, 230-pound Kouns was an outstanding blocker and defensive end. Both were three-year starters.

The 5-10, 205-pound Lewis rushed for 1,152 yards on just 136 carries and scored 14 touchdowns. He was voted the district Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Also on the first team from Ironton was senior defensive lineman Josh Carty, the team's leader in quarterback sacks. Senior linebacker and leading tackler Adam Ferguson was named first team on the defensive side.

Kerns (5-10, 160) was on the first unit. Kerns caught only 10 passes in the run-oriented Ironton offense, but he averaged 31.4 yards a catch and had an amazing six touchdowns.

All-Ohio picks Walker (6-0, 200), Carty (6-0, 210) and Ferguson (6-0, 215) were all first team all-district.

Fairland junior wide receiver Sam Huff (5-10, 155) was a first team selection and senior quarterback Michael Hill (6-0, 160) was a second team selection after throwing for 2,432 yards and 20 touchdowns. Huff caught 51 passes for 1,113 yards and eight TDs.

Rock Hill junior running back K.C. Christian (5-10, 175) was special mention. He gained 1,264 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. Senior lineman Justin Lavender (6-2, 245) was also on the special mention list after making first team all-district along with Christian.

South Point senior defensive back Tommy Hayner (5-10,1 55) was named to the special mention. On offense, Hayner caught 40 passes for 640 yards and was named to the first team.
