Seven disabled deer hunters from Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia participated in the South Hills Chapter National Wild Turkey Federation's first-ever Ultimate Team-Up recently.
An Ultimate Team-Up event matches disabled hunters with able-bodied persons to supply assistance.
During the three days of hunting, all the hunters got the opportunity to see deer in the woods, but Joe Wittkamp of Jackson was the only hunter to bring a deer back to camp. Wittcamp, who is confined to a wheel chair, harvested the six-point buck while hunting on the property owned by Howie Damron near Getaway.
Damron, a local singer and guitar player, was named national spokesman for the NWTF's Wheelin' Sportsmen program earlier this year. Since then, Damron has recorded a soon-to-be released CD entitled "Share the Feeling." The title cut from the CD is a song about disabled hunters and the Wheelin' Sportsmen program.
Proceeds from the national sales of the CD will benefit the NWTF's Wheelin' Sportsmen program.
The three-day archery event was sponsored by Accent Health Care, Inc. of Coal Grove.
Frank Fulks and his family provided their farm in Scottown as a base camp for the event that concluded with a hog roast.
The National Wild Turkey Federation is a non-profit conservation organization with more than 31,000 chapters and 550,000 members in all 50 states. The NWTF offers outreach programs for youth, women and the disabled.
