Lady Hornets roll in opener

COAL GROVE - Now that's getting off on the right foot.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets opened up a comfortable halftime lead and coasted to a lopsided 64-30 season opening win over the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans on Saturday.

"It's always nice to win that first game," Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. "It got a little sloppy at times, but you expect that the first time out."

Samantha Hall and Chelsea Markins scored 17 points each to lead the Lady Hornets. Maggie Young added 8 points.

Maggie Cardosi had 9 points, Chrissy Glockner 8 and Heather Lansing 7 to pace the Lady Titans.

Hall scored 8 points and Markins 5 in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 15-8 lead.

The defense held Notre Dame to 6 points in the second quarter and Markins scored 5 more points including her second 3-pointer as the lead grew to 28-14 at halftime.

Hall had 6 points in the third quarter as Coal Grove opened up a 46-20 cushion and Miller emptied his bench.

Coal Grove plays at Piketon on Tuesday.
