Titans desperation pass beats Green on final play

PORTSMOUTH - It stands to reason that the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans know something about a Hail Mary.
With the game tied 13-13 and the ball resting at the Green 40, there was only time for one last desperation play.
Quarterback Matt Mader rolled to his right and threw a long pass that Ben Haaf caught and then ran the final 10 yards into the end zone as time expired to give the Titans a 19-13 win over the Green Bobcats Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
Mader threw three incomplete passes and a false start penalty moved the ball back 5 yards to the 40 with only a few seconds to play.
Green, 2-5 and 0-3, couldn't find any luck. Fullback and leading rusher Mark Castro suffered a knee injury in the second quarter and did not return except for an extra point play. Guard Curtis Botkins took over at fullback and ran 16 times for 46 yards.
C.J. Blevins ran 16 times for 94 yards while Castro had 50 yards on 10 carries before his early exit.
"We were short-handed once Mark went down, but our kids still fought hard," Green coach Kevin Sheridan said. "That's tough for a guard to to move to fullback, but Curtis did it and didn't bat an eye. He did a good job."
Green took a 7-0 lead on a 9-yard run by Castro in the first quarter. He also kicked the extra point.
Notre Dame (3-3, 1-2) came back to tie the game on a 1-yard run by Michael Russell in the second quarter. Russell also kicked the point after.
Russell put the Titans up 13-7 on a 35-yard run early in the fourth quarter, but the conversion kick missed.
The Bobcats then put together a 7-minute drive that culminated with a 9-yard run by Blevins for the tying score with 1:34 to play. But the hobbling Castro was unable to get any lift on his conversion kick and it was blocked.
"We were talking about it and Mark said he felt he could plant and get enough to get it over," Sheridan said. "He could have said no, but he wanted
to take that on him and see what he could do."
That set the stage for the Titans miracle finish.
