County wants state to donate ODOT garage

Never mind a "for sale" sign; we like what we see.
The Lawrence County Commission Thursday agreed to ask the Ohio Department of Transportation for something it soon won't have any use for: its old garage.
ODOT is building a new garage in Lawrence County, at the new South Ironton Industrial Park. Once they move into those new digs, the old garage on South Sixth Street will be empty. Commissioners would like to see the state donate the property to the county for use by the engineer's office.
"That's a good price," Commissioner Jason Stephens joked about the request that the property be donated.
The old state garage would be twice or even three times the size of the county's garage, which was built in the 1930s and does not have adequate parking.
"This takes it (the county garage) out of a residential area and knocks the noise down a level. That would be so much better it would be unreal," Commissioner George Patterson said.
Commissioners said having the property in county hands would make it more available if it were ever considered for economic development, since it is near the site of the Liebert Corporation.
