GALLIPOLIS - The veterans did their job and the youngsters did the rest.
With returning starters P.J. Rase and Trent Finley turning in the top scores, freshmen Bryon Huff and Kyle Rase gave solid efforts as the Chesapeake Panthers won their second straight Ohio Valley Conference golf championship last Friday at Cliffside Country Club.
Rase was the OVC medalist with a 77 and Finley tied for the runner-up spot with an 80. But the Panthers found themselves behind in the overall team standings until Huff finished his round with an 87 and Rase carded a 91.
"Cliffside is a tough course. We were behind and our two freshmen helped us win it. I was really pleased," Panthers coach Dave Houck said.
"We lost our top golfer from last year, but we didn't seem to miss a beat. We picked up where we left off from last year."
The Panthers 335 team score was four strokes better than second place South Point which had a 339. River Valley was next at 379, Rock Hill 383 and Fairland did not have enough golfers for a team score.
Houck said his team is playing well at the right time of the season.
"We're playing alright right now. When we won it last year, that was something we'd been hoping to do for a long time and we did it fairly easily," Houck said.
