WILGUS - Twenty years ago, the Lawrence County Draft Horse Association began serving up equal helpings of down home fun and homemade sorghum and every year for the last 20 years, people throughout the area have come to sample both offerings.
This weekend, that tradition continues.
The Wilgus Sorghum Festival will be Saturday and Sunday on a farm off State Route 141. Draft horse association member Judy Balmer said the festival brings in people from all over the Tri-State.
"I got a call a couple of weeks ago from someone in Northern Ohio who was coming down," We had people who used to come from Florida."
Again this year home made sorghum apple butter and other goodies will be on sale. There will be a pumpkin contest, horse plowing contest, baked goods contest, draft horse colt raffle and an auction. A petting zoo, blacksmith shop, crafts and musical entertainment will also be featured.
Approximately 25 members of the draft horse association will spend 50-60 hours this week getting the site ready for visitors, and then will begin planning next year's event almost immediately after this year's festival. The association also has wagon rides and other activities throughout the year.
Balmer said it is usually memories that bring people back year after year: memories of a time when life was simpler and slower-paced.
"They come because that's how they remembered that it used to be. It's a family thing, a community thing."
The festival will be 1 p.m.- 5 p.m. each day. Admission is free.
